Urban Indians
For his last collection of the millennium, Ralph Kemp found inspiration in Indians from all over the American continent, from Eskimo, Sioux and Comanche to Amazonian tribes. The urban tribes of the year 2000 will bear the symbols of the ancestral cultures of the vast forests and the great North. Large coats lined with long-haired fake fur, jackets in synthetic lambswool with contrasting red on white topstitching, sweaters and pants with sleeves and legs decorated with fur, black, ecru and grey tricolored ensembles in fitted felt or boiled wool, dresses in fake lynx with rounded pockets adorned with tricolored fringe, ponchos and tunics with leather, woven mohair and flambés, and reptile motifs decorated with feathers all comprise this ethnic theme. For the shapes and forms we find asymmetrical cuts at the bottom of pants, sportswear details, hooded sweatshirts, large oval drawstring pockets and wraparound skirts. Shades of black, white and bright red are combined in eye-popping patterns or contrasting pairs, with touches of grey and turquoise. We wonder if Zazie, the French singer who modeled for the designer, has already made her selections.
