Eskimo fashion Julie Skarland once again presented her men's and women's fall-winter 98/99 collections in a fashion show in Paris. Of Norweigian origin, Skarland came to Paris in 1987 to take classes at the Berçot studio after finishing architecture studies and having earned a dressmaking degree in Norway, before launching her first collection in 1991. She stays in touch with her Scandinanvian roots by creating ethereal fashions inspired from fairy tales and legends where the great North plays a recurring role. This was once again the case with the "Eskimo Mix " collection. Hobbit style fake fur boots under laced sandals, numerous pieces featuring plush grey fake fur, little straight dresses, shorts, pants and short pants for men, a skirt and tunic ensemble with a long, shaggy fur collar, a bustier and long skirt worn with a tall toque hat... Another characteristic of the collections of Julie Skarland is the oppositions of materials and the contrasts in style; a tulle underskirt with a yellow and grey off the shoulder top are worn with bulky wool socks, the forementioned laced sandals and fat fur mittens, and one can find melanges of knit with checkered woven fabrics, or lace on a simple belted grey pinstriped dress. Julie Skarland is also known for her use of artisanal methods of painting and embroidery and her creativity with prints. Last January she was awarded the first prize in the printed fabric competition organized by the Sehm and APTX-3 Suisses Multimedia, which earned her a free stand at the Sehm in September and the production of 60 meters of her print. An example of her extraordinary talent, this woven fabric imitates a multicolored jacquard hand knit, and is featured on jackets and skirts, bustier dresses and slightly fitted dresses, and on large or short pants for men. It is a clever and cheerful style, but the collection nonetheless includes several rigorously simple models. Virginie Transon |
