Rustic chic
On the eve of the official opening of fashion week, the Sino-Laotian designer Yao Souka presented his fall-winter 1999/2000 collection with a fashion show spectacle. As winter 2000 marks the year of the dragon, the show closed with a monkey armed with a fan dancing/battling with the mythical animal. The women's ready-to-wear collection, along with masculine styles, features pieces in boiled or felted wool with frayed edges, for an elegantly rustic look. There were short fitted jackets, sometimes with asymmetrical effects or cut-out panels, large belted or short coats, some with giant collars that transformed into hoods. The dresses and ensembles were done in honeycomb knits that followed the forms of the body, often with camisole tops. One dress in ivory ribbed boiled wool flared beautifully. Pants reach the ankle and were paired with small fitted jackets, and the dresses and skirts were very long. Men don't hesitate going out in long skirts or bermuda shorts in frayed boiled wool with pea jackets featuring high collars and large rounded collars that open on the side. For evening, there are pants and dresses in flower-print satin, with reverse cowl necklines or removable collars and sleeves in gold or bronze sequins. The color palette featured ivory, natural and brown shades with touches of color such as indigo, electric blue, acid green, carmine red or golden yellow.
